Slope: converting percent to degrees and ratio

Convert slope between percent, degrees and ratio. See common slopes you meet in everyday life.

Slope in percent is the ratio of rise to horizontal distance (tangent of the angle × 100): 10 % means a 10 m rise over 100 m. Per mille (10 ‰ = 1 %) is used for railways and drainage gradients. The ratio 1:x tells you after how many metres horizontally the height rises by 1 metre. Edit any field and the others recalculate.

Common slopes in practice

Percent = rise per 100 m of horizontal distance; ratio 1:x = the height rises 1 m every x metres.

Where you meet it Slope (%) Angle (°) Ratio
Terrace drainage slope 2 % 1.1° 1:50
Signed road gradient 6 % 3.4° 1:16.7
Steeper road hill 10 % 5.7° 1:10
Wheelchair ramp (max) 8 % 4.6° 1:12
Steep mountain road 15 % 8.5° 1:6.7
Very steep road 20 % 11.3° 1:5
Black ski slope 40 % 21.8° 1:2.5

Values are indicative – specific standards (roofs, ramps, stairs) vary by material and regulation.
