How to calculate tile consumption

The basis is the room area (length × width) divided by the area of one tile. To that we add cutting waste – offcuts from trimming tiles at walls and corners.

pieces = room area ÷ tile area × (1 + waste)

Example: a 4 × 3 m room = 12 m², a 60 × 60 cm tile = 0.36 m². 12 ÷ 0.36 = 34 pieces, with 10% waste 37 pieces. Sold by the pack, so it's rounded up to whole packs.

How much waste to allow

Waste depends on the laying pattern and the shape of the room. Roughly: 5–10% for straight laying in a regular room, 15% for diagonal laying or a complex floor plan, more for large formats and irregular shapes. It's better to buy a little extra – re-ordering the same shade from a different batch is often a problem.

Tiles vs. floating floor

The area calculation is the same, but the piece format differs (floating-floor planks tend to be narrow and long) and so does the waste. For a floating floor, also account for the fact that it's laid with "staggered joints" (a running bond), which slightly increases the waste.
