How to calculate paint consumption

First the area to paint is calculated: the room's perimeter × height (walls), plus the ceiling if applicable, minus windows and doors. Litres then follow from the area, number of coats, and paint coverage:

litres = area (m²) × number of coats ÷ coverage (m²/l)

Example: a 4 × 3 m room, 2.6 m high → walls (2×(4+3)×2.6) = 36.4 m², ceiling 12 m², minus 4 m² of windows and doors = 44.4 m². At 2 coats and a coverage of 8 m²/l that's 11.1 l of paint.

How many coats

A white, smooth wall usually needs just 2 coats. A significant colour change, a saturated shade, or an absorbent surface will need 3 coats. The first coat on a new surface is often thinned (a primer coat).
