How electricity consumption and cost are calculated

Electricity consumption is measured in kilowatt-hours (kWh). An appliance with a power rating of 1,000 W (1 kW) running for one hour consumes 1 kWh. You get the price by multiplying the consumption by the price per kWh – contracts often quote this per MWh (1 MWh = 1,000 kWh).

consumption (kWh) = power (kW) × time (h)  •  cost = consumption × price per kWh

Example: an appliance with a power rating of 2,000 W running 24 h a day consumes 48 kWh per day. At a price of 4 210 CZK/MWh (i.e. 4,21 CZK/kWh) that's roughly 202 CZK per day.

Why the price is quoted per MWh

Electricity suppliers commonly quote power-only electricity in CZK/MWh. The final price also includes distribution, taxes, and fees, so the real price per kWh tends to be higher than just the power component. For an exact calculation, enter the price from your bill.
