How to design a staircase
The number of steps comes from the floor height divided by the target step height (rounded to a whole number). The actual step height is then the floor height divided by the number of steps:
count = round(height ÷ target step height) • step height = height ÷ count
The comfort rule (2h + b)
A comfortable staircase satisfies the formula 2 × step height + step depth = 60–65 cm (the length of a human stride). The angle should be roughly 25–35°. A step height over 18 cm or under 16 cm tends to be uncomfortable.
Example: height 280 cm, target height 17 cm → 16 steps of 17.5 cm. With a depth of 28 cm: 2×17.5 + 28 = 63 cm ✓.
Note: the calculation is approximate for a straight staircase. The binding requirements come from the applicable building code and the project. Family homes have specific height and angle limits.
