Gas consumption calculator
Convert gas consumption between m³ and kWh and estimate the cost.
Enter the volume in m³ or the energy in kWh – the other value and the price are computed.
How gas is converted from m³ to kWh
A gas meter measures volume in cubic metres (m³), but suppliers bill gas in kWh. The conversion accounts for the volume coefficient (correction to standard conditions) and the heat of combustion (calorific value of the gas delivered):
energy (kWh) = volume (m³) × volume coefficient × heat of combustion (kWh/m³)
The heat of combustion is around 10.5 kWh/m³, and the volume coefficient is usually close to 1. Exact values can be found on your supplier's bill. The price is quoted per MWh (1 MWh = 1,000 kWh).
Note: the calculation is approximate. The volume coefficient and heat of combustion depend on the delivery point and the specific supply; exact values are on your bill.
